Close Tabs Remotely

Overview

Close Tabs lets teachers remotely close browser tabs on student devices — individually or across the entire class. Close a specific distracting tab, close all non-educational tabs, or use "Close All Tabs" for a clean slate.

Prerequisites

  • Teacher account in KyberClassroom with an active class
  • Students on managed devices connected to KyberGate
  • Devices must be online with the KyberGate browser extension or agent

Steps

Step 1: View Student Tabs

Open your class in KyberClassroom. Click on any student's thumbnail to expand their view and see all open tabs with title, domain, time open, and content category.

Step 2: Close a Specific Tab

Click the X next to any tab in the student's tab list. The tab closes immediately. The student sees: "A tab was closed by your teacher."

Step 3: Close All Tabs for One Student

Click Close All Tabs at the top of the student's tab list → Confirm.

Step 4: Close Tabs for the Entire Class

Click the Close Tabs button in the class toolbar. Choose:

  • Close all non-educational tabs — keeps educational tabs, closes social media, entertainment, gaming
  • Close all tabs — closes everything on every device
  • Close tabs matching... — enter a domain to close that site's tabs everywhere

Confirm, and tabs close across all devices within 2-3 seconds.

Tips

  • Use "Close all non-educational tabs" at the start of class for a clean workspace
  • Pair with Focus Mode to prevent closed tabs from being reopened
  • The "Close tabs matching..." option is great for targeting specific distractions (e.g., all TikTok tabs)
  • Closing tabs does not delete student work — Google Docs auto-saves continuously
  • Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+X (or Cmd+Shift+X on Mac)

FAQ

Q: Can students reopen tabs I closed? A: Yes, unless you also activate Focus or Restrict Mode. For persistent blocking, use Restrict Mode.

Q: Does closing a tab lose student work? A: Most web apps auto-save. However, unsaved form input may be lost. Use discretion.

Q: Does this work on iPads? A: Yes. On iPads with the KyberGate agent, Safari tabs can be closed remotely.

Q: What if a student has 50+ tabs open? A: Use "Close All" or "Close all non-educational" to clean up heavy tab users.
