Overview
The KyberGate Parent app gives parents and guardians visibility into how their child uses school-issued devices, along with controls to pause internet, manage filters, and set time limits. The app was rebuilt from the ground up with five dedicated tabs: Summary, Activity, Filters, Time Limits, and Settings.
The app is free for parents. Schools control which features are available and generate invite codes for parent onboarding.
Prerequisites
- Your school district must have KyberGate with the Parent Portal enabled
- An invite code from your school (generated from the student's Family tab in the KyberGate dashboard)
- An iPhone running iOS 15+ or Android device (Android coming soon)
- Your child must have a managed device enrolled in KyberGate
How Invite Codes Work
- The school admin or teacher opens a student's record in the KyberGate dashboard and clicks the Family tab
- They click Generate Invite Code — this creates a unique 6-character code (e.g., "KG-4X7R9P")
- The code is shared with the parent via email, text, or printed letter
- The parent enters the code in the KyberGate Parent app to link their account to the student
- Each code is single-use and expires after 7 days if not redeemed
- Multiple codes can be generated for the same student (e.g., one for each parent/guardian)
Steps
Step 1: Download the App
Search for "KyberGate Parent" in the Apple App Store and download it. The app is free with no subscriptions or in-app purchases.
Step 2: Create Your Account
Open the app and tap Get Started. Sign up with email/password, Google, or Apple Sign-In.
Step 3: Enter the Invite Code
Tap Link a Student and enter the invite code from your school. The code connects your account to your child's KyberGate profile.
Step 4: Multi-Student Support
If you have multiple children in the district, add each one using their individual invite code. Switch between student profiles using the dropdown selector at the top of the app. Each student has their own independent dashboard.
What Each Tab Does
Summary Tab
Your at-a-glance overview of your child's device activity:
- Today's Screen Time — total time the device has been actively used today, with a comparison to yesterday and the weekly average
- Device Status — whether the device is currently online or offline, battery level, and last seen time
- Safety Alerts — any Red Flag safety alerts triggered today (concerning searches, flagged content)
- Top Sites — the 5 most-visited websites today with time spent
- Quick Actions — one-tap buttons for Pause Internet, Find Device, and Block a Site
Activity Tab
Detailed browsing history and activity log:
- Timeline View — scrollable chronological feed of websites visited, showing domain, page title, timestamp, duration, and content category
- Category Breakdown — pie chart showing how device time is split across categories (Educational, Social Media, Entertainment, etc.)
- Search History — search queries entered on Google, Bing, and YouTube
- Filtered/Blocked — toggle to see which sites were blocked by the school's filtering policy
- Date Filter — view activity for today, this week, or a custom date range
Filters Tab
Manage additional website restrictions (on top of the school's policy):
- My Blocked Sites — domains you've personally blocked for your child. Add or remove sites anytime.
- School Blocked Sites — see which sites the school blocks (view-only; you cannot unblock school-blocked sites)
- Block a Site — enter a domain (e.g., "tiktok.com") to block it on the school device
- Category Filters — toggle entire categories (Social Media, Gaming, Streaming) on/off
Important: Parent filters only add restrictions. You cannot override or weaken the school's filtering policy. Your blocks stack on top of the school's blocks.
Time Limits Tab
Control when and how long your child can use the device:
- Daily Time Limit — set a maximum daily screen time (e.g., 2 hours). When the limit is reached, the device displays a "Time's Up" message.
- Bedtime Schedule — set a nightly lockout (e.g., 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM). During bedtime hours, the device is locked.
- Pause Internet — instantly pause all internet access for a set duration (30 min, 1 hour, 2 hours, or until you resume). Useful during homework or dinner.
- Schedule — set recurring schedules (e.g., no internet on school nights after 8 PM)
Note: Time Limits set by parents apply outside of school hours only. During school hours, the school's bell schedule and policies take priority.
Settings Tab
Manage your account and notification preferences:
- Notification Preferences — choose which notifications you receive: safety alerts, daily summaries, weekly reports, time limit reached
- Linked Students — view and manage linked student profiles
- Add Another Student — link additional children using new invite codes
- Account — update email, password, and profile photo
- Help & Support — access the help center and contact school IT
Tips
- Check the Summary tab daily — it takes 30 seconds and gives you a complete picture
- Enable push notifications for Safety Alerts — these are the most important notifications
- Use the Weekly Report notification (enabled in Settings) to get a Sunday evening email summarizing the week's activity
- Pause Internet is a great tool during homework time or family dinner — it eliminates all browsing distractions
- If you notice concerning activity (self-harm, bullying, inappropriate content), contact your school's counselor immediately
- Parent controls only affect the school device — personal phones and tablets are not monitored
- Both parents/guardians can link to the same student using separate invite codes and separate accounts
FAQ
Q: Is the app really free? A: Yes. No subscriptions, in-app purchases, or hidden costs. The school pays for KyberGate; the parent app is included.
Q: Can both parents have the app? A: Yes. Each parent creates their own account and links using separate invite codes for the same student.
Q: What if I have kids in different schools? A: If both schools use KyberGate, you can link all students in one app. Each student appears in the dropdown selector.
Q: Will my child know I'm monitoring them? A: Viewing activity does not send any notification to the child. If you pause internet or block a site, they will see a restriction notification on their device.
Q: Do Time Limits apply during school? A: No. During school hours, the school's policies take priority. Your time limits apply after school, evenings, and weekends.
Q: What about Android? A: An Android version is in development. In the meantime, use the web portal at parent.kybergate.com from any browser.
Q: What if I lost my invite code? A: Contact your school's front office or IT department to generate a new code. Old codes expire after 7 days.
Q: Can I see what apps are installed on the device? A: The Parent app shows browsing activity (websites). Installed app lists are visible to school administrators but not currently shown in the Parent app.
