Overview
Push URL lets teachers instantly open a specific webpage on every student device in their class. Instead of writing a URL on the board and waiting for students to type it (with inevitable typos), one click opens the page for everyone simultaneously.
This is useful for directing students to a specific assignment, form, quiz, reading material, or interactive activity.
Prerequisites
- Teacher account in KyberClassroom with an active class
- Students on managed devices connected to KyberGate
- The URL must be accessible under the current filtering policy (it cannot be a blocked site)
Steps
Step 1: Open Your Class
Log in to teachers.kybergate.com and select the class you want to push a URL to.
Step 2: Click Push URL
Click the Push URL button in the class toolbar (it looks like an external link icon with an arrow).
Step 3: Enter the URL
Paste or type the full URL you want to open on student devices. For example:
- https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra
- https://quizlet.com/your-set-id
KyberGate will validate the URL to make sure it is reachable and not blocked by the current policy.
Step 4: Choose How It Opens
Select how the URL should appear on student devices:
- New Tab — opens in a new browser tab (students keep their current work)
- Current Tab — replaces the student's active tab (more attention-grabbing)
- Full Screen — opens the URL and enters full-screen mode (best for presentations or assessments)
Step 5: Push
Click Send. The URL opens on all online student devices within 2–5 seconds. A confirmation message shows how many devices received the push.
Step 6: Verify
The class view shows a brief "URL Pushed" indicator next to each student who successfully received it. If a device is offline, the URL will be pushed when the device comes back online (within the next 5 minutes; after that the push expires).
Tips
- Bookmark your most-used URLs in KyberClassroom's Quick Links library for one-click access
- Pair Push URL with Focus Mode: first push the assignment URL, then activate Focus Mode with that domain whitelisted
- If the URL contains student-specific parameters (like Google Forms that pre-fill student info), use the class roster integration to send personalized URLs
- Push URL works on all supported platforms: iPads, Chromebooks, Macs, and Windows devices
- You can push URLs to individual students by selecting them from the roster instead of pushing to the entire class
- The push notification is non-intrusive — it does not display a popup, it simply opens the tab
FAQ
Q: What if a student's device is closed or sleeping? A: The push command is queued and delivered when the device wakes up and checks in, as long as it is within 5 minutes of the push. After 5 minutes, the push expires.
Q: Can I push a URL to multiple classes at once? A: Currently, Push URL works one class at a time. Select each class and push separately.
Q: Does the URL have to be on the whitelist? A: The URL must be accessible under the current filtering policy. If the site is blocked, the push will succeed but students will see a block page. Make sure to allow the domain first if needed.
Q: Can students close the pushed tab? A: Yes, students can close the tab after it opens (unless you combine it with Focus Mode in Full Screen). Push URL is a nudge, not a lock.
Q: Is Push URL logged? A: Yes. Each push is recorded with the URL, teacher, class, timestamp, and delivery count. This is visible in the admin dashboard.
